By way of background, opening thoughts: Barrel 27 Wine Company makes a very interesting viognier / roussanne / marsanne (current blends add grenache blanc) white wine blend from central California, called an equally interesting "High on the Hog".

Original tasting and review : This is Barrel 27 High on the Hog White Wine, Paso Robles, California, 2007, finished at a truly whopping 15.4% alcohol.  Remember, this is a WHITE wine!  There must be something about the label name that correlates with the alcohol level.  Our first sampling is seven years from vintage date - ambitious for a moderately price white wine.

In the glass: Light yellow with gold overtones.

On the nose: Poured at a cold cellar temperature and swirled vigorously, shows sweet grasses with some mineral oil.  From the aroma, seems like this will be slick, full, tasty and aromatic.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated.  A slick, sleek mouthfeel, but full of bright aromatics.  The palate conjures citrus, pear and perhaps shaved almonds.  Clean finish.  Shows no injuries whatsoever due to age and the only hint of the high alcohol level is in the powerful mouthfeel and aromatics.  Interestingly, the balance, aromatics and power become even more powerful as the cool wine warmed towards room temperature.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars based on its longevity, power and romance.  This rating is from the five-star Spirit of Wine scale and, based on the price point, makes this a best value.
