Original tasting and review : This is Domaine de Nizas, Coteaux du Languedoc, France, 2005, finished at 13.5% alcohol.  This southern France blend is grown in Mediterranean climate and soils and made from 60% syrah, 35% mourvedre and 5% grenache.

In the glass: Deep rustic red, with slight hint of purple at the edge and opaque away from the edge of the glass.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep muddled purple fruit, fairly mature.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep red with a tangy element.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced with layers of black pepper, blackberry and an underlying chariness.  May well round out with a bit of decanting time.  Finishes lively with red and black notes and a bright tone.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
