By way of background, opening thoughts: Sutter Home is among the most widely recognized labels in the consumer segment in the United States.  We will sample their California chardonnay today.

Original tasting and review : This is Sutter Home Chardonnay, California, 2012, finished at 13% alcohol, sampled quite young.

In the glass: Clear with yellow and vanilla hints.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows sweet grasses and clean fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be friendly and round.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced with bright ripe pear and plenty of supporting acids.  Light, clean, fresh and seemingly sweet, but without residual sugar.  Clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, and is a best value at its "practically free" price point.
