By way of background, opening thoughts: Wow.  Sampling a cellared Dry Creek Valley cabernet sauvignon with 17 years of age - awesome!  Here's hopes....

Original tasting and review : This is Pedroncelli Three Vineyards Special Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, California, 1997, finished at 13.5% alcohol, and first sampled in July, 2014, at 17 years of age!

In the glass: Deep muddy mahogany red.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows fun and bright cabernet fruit, with good, strong red currant elements.  From the aroma, seems like this will be remarkably youthful for its age.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bringing a serious, solid, layered cabernet sauvignon experience, worthy of fireside chats among old friends or dinners with well-aged beefs.  NO hint of age, except for the well-knit character of the fruit, tannins and acids.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a big plus for balance and longevity on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  A good value by any reckoning, including the strict Spirit of Wine criteria.
