Review: **+ $ Stonecroft Ruhani Cabernet / Merlot / Syrah, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, 1999

By way of background, opening thoughts: If I said we were about to sample a New Zealand wine, you'd probably be thinking, "Hmmm, great - been awhile since I've tried a nice New Zealand sauvignon blanc."  But you'd be wrong!  Today we're going to Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, home to their more full-bodied reds.  In fact, due to a great price (ie, practically free!), we will be trying a 15-year-old red blend.

Original tasting and review : This is Stonecroft Ruhani Cabernet / Merlot / Syrah, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, 1999, finished at 13% alcohol and first sampled at 15 years from vintage date, in July, 2014.

In the glass: Deep brick with some orange emerging within an inch or so of the edge.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright but very mature red fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this may be tired with some fruitiness still intact.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact light and balanced dry red tones, showing less age than expected, some light acidity, few tannins or volume, but still elements of dry red currant and fresh raspberry fruit (but without the raspberry aromas).

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a big plus for longevity and bright balance on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
