Original tasting and review : This is Strathewen Hills Merlot, Yarra Valley, Australia, 2005, finished at 14.3% alcohol and first sampled nine years from vintage date, July, 2014.

In the glass: Deep dusty red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright red berries and some mature notes.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet and fleshy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet, round, mature, but friendly, easy-going and yet suggesting a certain depth. Shows bright sweet red fruits and some surrounding softer blackberry.  Clean, but swift finish.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its attractive, "practically free" price point.
