By way of background, opening thoughts: I enjoyed the Vina Ardanza vintage 2001 a great deal.  Today we're sampling a newer vintage, 2004, but still a full decade from its vintage date.

Original tasting and review : This is Vina Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain, 2004, finished at 13.5% alcohol and first sampled in July, 2014.

In the glass: Medium deep red with orange hints.

On the nose: Poured at cellar temperature and swirled vigorously, shows tangy bright old red fruit and some aged oak and tobacco.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright but showing distinct age.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced, red fruity with bright cherry notes, plenty of oak in the background.  Spicy cinnamon comes forward and helps the red berries cleanse your palate for the next sip.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a big plus for balanced power and longevity on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
