Original tasting and review : This is Vina Herminia Excelsus, Rioja, Spain, 2009, finished at 14% alcohol and first sampled five years from vintage date, in July, 2014.  This is an equal mix of tempranillo and garnacha, cellar aged for eight months.

In the glass: Burgundy hued, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright fruit, some tar and fresh laundry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be layered and balanced.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full featured, with a broad, expansive mouthfeel, sweet purple fruits, solid tannins and plenty of acids that bring the deep sip up into your cheeks.  Slow, steady glide to the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
