Original tasting and review : This is JC van Staden Malbec, Lodi, California, 2013, finished at 13.8% alcohol and first sampled one year from vintage date, in October, 2014.
In the glass: Deep red with some purple.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, charcoal tinged fruit. From the aroma, seems like this will be rich, veined, deep and well-oaked.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated, though somewhat brighter and lighter, with a purple tone to the fruit, but soft oak surrounding the clean fruit. Builds to a bright finish, but lingers with a slow, furry fade.
In summary: Overall, easy two plus star on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. I'd designate this a good value.
