California Red Blend Face Off: Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red (2012) vs Chateau St Jean Soiree Red (2011)

Face Off:  Today we'll go head-to-head with two California red blends, both moderately priced.

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red.

Original tasting and review : This is Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red, Lake County, California, 2012, finished at 13.9% alcohol and first sampled three years from vintage date, in March, 2015.  It is a blend of zinfandel, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and peite sirah.

In the glass: Medium deep mahogany and pink.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft red berries with some light perfume.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and full.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing some red and black fruit grip, nice red berries, with a light velvet backup, but with edges of darkness in the form of light charcoal bringing up the rear. Really curls in your cheeks with some acids too for the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars and just touches a plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

In the glass: Bold deep red, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bold, dark red fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full and bold.
