Review: ***+ $ Columbia Winery Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington, 2013 = BEST VALUE

Original tasting and review : This is Columbia Winery Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington, 2013, finished at 13.9% alcohol and first sampled a mere 2 years from vintage date, in March, 2015.

In the glass: Medium deep red with violet highlights.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bold, bright, aromatic berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fresh and vigorous.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact perky and fresh, with plenty of just-ripe blackberries and some red currants.  Acids curl into your cheeks and bring a few sprigs of tannins along as well.  The brightness makes this a merlot to accompany food.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, almost adding a plus for its aromatics.  Best value when obtained at an attractive price point.

With food:  In fact, as anticipated, this merlot really opens up with food, offering up its flavors and aromas in a much more robust way.   Adding a star to the three points!
