Original tasting and review : This is Frei Brothers Reserve Merlot, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County, California, 2012, finished at 14.4% alcohol and first sampled 3 years from vintage date, in March, 2015.

In the glass: Deep mahogany, opaque in the center and pink at the rim.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep aromas of black fruit and cedar.  From the aroma, seems like this will be rich, layered and still bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated.  Nice waves of cedar-infused ripe blackberry hit your palate first.  That is followed by a velvet wash across your tongue and ripe blackberry flows to your cheeks.  Just a touch of acids brighten the modest hang time, leaving a clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Best value by our criteria.
