Original tasting and review : This is Markstone Pinot Noir, Los Carneros, California, 2013, finished at 14.5% alcohol and first sampled two years from vintage date, in May, 2015.  This was procured from Trader Joe's and may not be widely available beyond that venue.

In the glass: Deep brick red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft and deep dry black cherry and strawberry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright with hints of charcoal and sweet cherry.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact quite dark, sweet and contemplative, with blackened oak surrounding a dry black cherry substrate. Bright acids lift the dark sip to a lengthier finish.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Best value - especially unusual for a pinot noir.
