By way of background: Today we'll go with a hyper-local tasting, chosen from one of the growing number of wineries right in my Malibu-area backyard. Mulholland Highway is a label of Malibu Sundowner, which reflects wines that are composed of some proportion acquired fruit (typically from outside the Malibu AVA) and some portion of locally-sourced fruit.  Today we have a grenache that is well-aged, with a review sample that was acquired commercially.

Original tasting and review : This is Mulholland Highway Wines Grenache, California, 2007, finished at 14.6% alcohol and first sampled 8 years from vintage date, in September, 2015.

Inspired by this wine: We're stomping through mud puddles, chewing on tasty pieces of beef jerky.

In the glass: Light brick with orange overtones.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows muddy, slightly funky tones, with elements of bright, brambly raspberries.  From the aroma, hard to judge if this will be bold, bright or tangy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact fatter and rounder than anticipated, bringing fat, aged plum and black cherry together for a full frontal fruit beginning.  This is followed by a lengthy finish, supported well by the sturdy alcohol, but a finish that doesn't really convert into something different than the original sip.  That is neither good nor bad, it just means that you get to enjoy the original sip for a much longer period!

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a plus for solid personality on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Would probably have been an even stronger contender at a younger age.
