By way of background: Oak Ridge Winery is the oldest operating winery in Lodi, California, an area best known for its old vine zinfandel grapes.  Oak Ridge will not be disappointing us in that regard here today, as we sample both a purebred zinfandel as well as a zin-dominated red blend.  Both of these wines are distributed under the OZV label, representing "old zinfandel vines", with review samples provided by the winery's agent.

Original tasting and review : This is Oak Ridge Winery OZV Red Blend, California, 2013,  a blend of zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, petite sirah and merlot, finished at 13.5% alcohol and first sampled 2 years from vintage date, in September, 2015.

Inspired by this wine: Walking and chatting with friends, we cut loose and foot race to the end of the block!

In the glass: Dusty black cherry.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows slightly smoky red berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet and bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact entirely different than expected: a rich furry onslaught of velvety red and black cherry, with surrounding elements of chocolate, tobacco and purple fruit.  The purple builds in a solid but brief finish.  The finish demonstrates only a light touch of tannins and acids, but shows solid structure at this young age.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a big plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a screaming best value at its bargain price point!

Original tasting and review : This is Oak Ridge Winery OZV Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi, California, 2013, finished at 13.95% alcohol and first sampled 2 years from vintage date, in September, 2015.

Inspired by this wine: Wearing slippers and jeans, I decide to put my feet up by the fireplace.

In the glass: Dark brick, moves to opaque about a half inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bold fragrant fat cherries whose aromas curl up from the glass right into your brain.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fat, sweet, luscious and layered.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bringing layers of furry red and black cherry, furry oak, ripe black raspberry, hints of cocoa and some sweet raisin.  Flavors build quickly and subside just as quickly, to a clean finish with a light cleansing tease of acids.

In summary: Overall, also rates three stars  plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this an easy best value as well!
