Original tasting and review : This is Trader Joe's Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 69, Yountville, Napa Valley, California, 2013, finished at 13.9% alcohol and first sampled 2 years from vintage date, in September, 2015.
Inspired by this wine: I'm mashing raspberries for a cobbler, while my chain-smoking cousin strolls by.
In the glass: Deep purple magenta, opaque in the center.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft, muddled raspberries. From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and red berry in nature.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing big red berries, but with a taut nature and encased in clinging tannins, with some light charred oak and solid acids. Plenty of structure holds the sip tightly together, with a suggestion that age or some decanting time will ease out some of the hidden fruit.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale
