Original tasting and review : This is Granite Ridge Reserve Pinot Noir, Western Cape, South Africa, 2012, finished at 13% alcohol and first sampled three years from vintage date, in September, 2015.
Inspired by this wine: A huge picnic in the yard, food all around, but the barbequed ribs are filling the air.
In the glass: Deep magenta and brick.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows a muddle of red and black fruit with strong charred oak elements. From the aroma, seems like this will be friendly but full of black oak.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing gobs of fruit but even bigger gobs of smoky charcoal briquettes, making this a real party in a fireplace! Black fruit holds fast for a modest finish.
In summary: Overall, just touches three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale
