Original tasting and review : This is River's End Vintners Reserve Merlot, California, 2013, finished at 13.2% alcohol. I liked this wine a great deal when I sampled the 2007 vintage a few years ago.
Inspired by this wine: Wearing a sharp jacket and sports shirt, no tie, ready to head out to the show.
In the glass: Ruby, brick and hints of orange. Quite light for a merlot.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows very faint hints of strawberry and cocoa. From the aroma, seems like this will be gentle indeed.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much more mouth-filling than anticipated, bringing fresh, broad layers of mixed red fruits, including cherries, strawberries and cranberries. But without the tartness you'd expect from that combination. In fact, the sip stays broad and slightly sweet, then closes up tightly and crisply.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars and just touches a plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a good value at the list price point.
