By way of background:  Today we are sampling two cabernet sauvignons from the Tasting Room West Coast Red Wine Sampler, which was acquired commercially.  Wines were bottled in 2012.

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel.

Original tasting and review : This is $$$ Renteria Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, 2008, finished at 14.2% alcohol and first sampled seven years from vintage date, in November, 2015.

Inspired by this wine:  At night, sitting on the swing watching the shooting stars in the clear, crisp sky.

In the glass: Deep mahogany, opaque in the very center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright and bold classic blackcurrant fruit.  Attitude and liveliness.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full with bright acids.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bright and roundly robust at the same time, bringing red currants and some sense of age.  But not at all tired.  Both creamy and bright in the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a plus for interesting balance and longevity on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Cadaretta Cabernet Sauvignon.

Original tasting and review : This is $$$ Cadaretta Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Washington, 2008, finished at 14.9% alcohol and first sampled seven years from vintage date, in November, 2015.

Inspired by this wine:  We're enjoying raspberry lollipops as we fix a bicycle flat by the side of the road.

In the glass: Bright mahogany, no brick color working through yet.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright, fresh red raspberry and liquer.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fun, bright and acidic.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact peppery bright red, with a sleek but creamy underbelly.  The finish glides along with a nicely balanced blend of very gentle tannins, apparent but not overwhelming acids and pleasingly dry red fruit.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
