Original tasting and review : This is Ahnfeldt Merlot, Napa Valley, California, 2012, finished at 14.8% alcohol and first sampled three years from vintage date, in November, 2015.

Inspired by this wine: Night is beginning to fall in the crisp, cool, pine forest - time to make camp.

In the glass: Cloudy magenta and dark brick, opaque in the very center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, classic black fruit with some surrounding oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep and layered.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact quite bright at first blush, with acids carrying tannins aloft and allowing fruit to slip out a moment at a time.  The sip stays aloft and finishes long and clean. Some hints of clean laundry flapping in the breezes come in at the end.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
