Original tasting and review : This is $$$ Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, California, 2009, finished at 14.5% alcohol and first sampled six years from vintage date, in November, 2015.

Inspired by this wine:  Sitting on the tree stump with boozy port and a couple of fine old cigars.

In the glass: Deep brick mahogany.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows old fruit and twigs.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep but perhaps a bit older.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated, with some solid lightly oxidized fruit and gentle supportive old oak.

In summary: Overall, rates two plus stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Watkins Family Winery Zinfandel.

Original tasting and review : This is $$$ Watkins Family Winery Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California, 2008, finished at 14.9% alcohol, including 14% petite sirah and first sampled seven years from vintage date, in November, 2015.

Inspired by this wine:  Strong breezes are lifting the woolen flannel shirts as we huddle at the fire.

In the glass: Deep magenta, opaque from an eighth inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows peppery and boldly alcoholic black fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be showy, black and bold.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bringing a balanced blend of dark blackberry and black raspberry fruit, bright acidity and round depth, with a finish that plays long off the tannic base.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale,
