By way of background:  Prosecco is an Italian white wine, often served sparkling, and often coming it at a lower price point than champagne, its sparkling white cousin from France.   The lower price point must not be taken to mean, however, that prosecco lacks charms, or indeed quite interesting variations between producers and styles.   Over time, we plan to explore prosecco at more depth, but for today, we will sample prosecco from one of the true vintage wineries in the region, and the first modern winery in the Veneto, Carpene Malvolti, founded almost 150 years ago in 1868.  The year of founding forms part of the label of this non-vintage wine, and must not be confused with a vintage year.  The winery today is being led by Rosanna Carpene, representing the fifth generation of the Carpene family to serve as president.

Original tasting and review : This is Carpene Malvolti 1868 Extra Dry Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, non-vintage, finished at 11% alcohol and first sampled in March, 2016.  This wine was prepared by winemaker Antonio Spinazze and review sample was provided by the winery's representative.

Inspired by this wine:  Lying back on the blanket, watching the shooting stars on a late spring evening.

In the glass: Clean with hints of yellow.

On the nose (reported by colleagues): Poured at chilled temperature, shows a prickly nose of lemon and light pear.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fun and genteel.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing a stainless steel-like cleanliness with a nicely-balanced flushed surround-sound of light stone fruit.  Finish is full and clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a big plus for accessibility on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Good value sparkling at an attractive price point.
