Review: ***+ $$$ Locations TX 6 Red Wine, Texas

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Locations wines.

By way of background : This wine is part of a Locations Wine series, made from grapes comprising various regions in a specific country or region, and named for that geography.  They are all the responsibility of Dave Phinney, winemaker, who grew the Locations concept from his original winemaking base in the Maury appellation in the South of France.  Earlier, I reviewed the France, Italy and Spain editions of the Locations line in this posting here.  Review wine was provided by the winery through their representatives at Balzac Communications & Marketing.

Original tasting and review : This is Locations TX 6 Red Wine, Texas, finished at 14.5% alcohol and aged in neutral French oak for 10 months.  It is first being sampled two years from the presumed 2006 vintage date, in January, 2018.  Frankly, it is the first Texas-origin wine I have put to a review-level tasting.  The red wine is a blend of grenache, mourvedre, syrah, carignan and additional unspecified varietals.  Winemaker Kim McPherson and his team at McPherson Cellars in Lubbock TX were engaged in sourcing and creating this wine.

Inspired by this wine: A windy night in the cabin, I'm wrapping in a big plaid wool blanket to warm the breezes.

In the glass: Deep cranberry red at the edge, moving to dark mahogany in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright purple fruit with bolder blackberry undertones.  From the aroma, this feels like it may have sparkles to light up its depths.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact quite bright and fragrant with pomegranate-style berry notes. The mid-palate moves to your upper cheeks and lodges there with bright red berries for a long stay.  Finishes crisp.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its well-integrated, diverse aromatic and flavor elements.
