Face-off: Wine Review & Rating of Bargain Chardonnays: ***+ Charles Shaw, *** Grape & Vine, ***+ ForestVille (Forest Ville) = BEST VALUES!

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for bargain chardonnays.

By way of background:
It was a tough day in the stock market today, following a generally miserable past week.  So I guess that means turning to super-cheap, "practically free" chardonnays!  Well, let's take one for the team and compare three chardonnays that come in at low single-digit US dollars per bottle price points.  Maybe there will be some good values or even best buys in the mix!

-----------

Inspired by Charles Shaw Chardonnay, California, 2021: We're in light jackets, taking a walk on a beautiful spring day.

Specs: This chardonnay is finished at 12.5% alcohol and first sampled one year from vintage date, in May, 2022.

In the glass: Transparent with just a hint of gold.

On the nose: Poured at chilled temperature and swirled vigorously, shows a bright and sweet white grape and kiwi nose.

On the palate:   Sweet fruit, reasonably sleek with a white grape essence. Clean and easy finish.

In summary: Overall, rates stars solid three stars with a plus for balance on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Awesome best value at the price point.

-----------

Inspired by Grape & Vine Chardonnay, America, non-vintage: We're playing with the two kittens on the porch - they're so cute!

Specs: This chardonnay is also finished at 12.5% alcohol and first sampled in May, 2022.  There is no vintage date or any indication of production date.

In the glass: Very light yellow and gold tinge.

On the nose: Poured at chilled temperature and swirled vigorously, shy aromas that brings a touch of sweet hay.  Very clean.

On the palate:  Simple and easy entry into your mouth, clean wash of simple, lightly sweet white grape fruit.  Fast, simple finish.

In summary: Overall, the clean sip does manage to rate three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, also reaching best value status.

-----------

Inspired by ForestVille (Forest Ville) Chardonnay, California, 2021: A bunch of us are headed for a late spring adventure at the lake - maybe we'll jump in for a swim, maybe just skip rocks!

Specs: This chardonnay is also finished at 12.5% alcohol and is being first sampled one year from vintage date, in May, 2022.

In the glass: Transparent with a glint of olive/yellow.

On the nose: Poured at chilled temperature and swirled vigorously, very shy and clean aromas, maybe hints of some layers below.

On the palate:  Fresh on the palate, this comes first with ripe applesauce laced with just the right amount of fresh honey.  Holds into your mouth for a moderate length, slowly slinking into your cheeks, with just the slightest hint of acids. The finish brings you back in for another sip - in a hurry!

In summary: Overall, rates a big three plus stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, almost to an unheard-of-four-stars-at-this-price-point!   Best value for sure.  Hands-down!
